Hiking the Catskills

T2 on the trail to Indian Head, November 2018

Troop 2 ascended the Indian Head Mountain Trail in the Catskills this early November weekend. Is that snow?  At around elevation 3500 feet, yes!  Like our 19+ part “AT” hike series, the Catskills could be another continuing story!

Biking to Tarrytown

T2 at the Tarrytown waterfront

T2 took one of our day biking trips up the OCA trail to Tarrytown, grabbed lunch on Main Street, and hung out down by the waterfront. Perfect soft-start to the Scouting season…which is really all year ’round.

As most of you may know, this is hike no. 16 in the series. Three scouts, plus Mr. Armacost (and of course Pepper) had previously completed the entire 88+ mile New York State section of the trail, and now several scouts have completed three large segments out of the 72+ mile New Jersey section.  More photos here (password required): https://10kw.smugmug.com/Scouts/2016-11-AT-trek-16/

Sorting collection no.3 of the HIFIVE Eagle Scout service project

T2 scouts led by Charlie F sort out the third collection in the ongoing HIFIVE food drive to benefit the local Hastings food pantry.   The response from the multiple congregations as well as local shoppers has been excellent, with overflowing bins at multiple locations.  Read more about the ESSP here.

Thunderbird Games 2016

Ten of our scouts operated the chariot race station at the annual Thunderbird Games in Croton Point Park.  Before and after a hard afternoon of serving their bother Cub Scouts and siblings, they camped on the point, did a Friday night hike, and enjoyed the near perfect autumn weather.  Many took in the Grucci fireworks show on Saturday night.

Clear Lake, Autumn 2016

We had an excellent first campout of autumn up at Clear Lake on Durland Scout Reservation.  It was a perfect afternoon for canoeing. Our two most experienced canoers showed us how to fall out of one – of course, just to demo the correct way to get back in 😉

We also hiked down to the archery range and got some shots in thanks to our Committee Chair (and certified Range Safety Officer) Mrs. Gallagher. Our youngest scout is a budding archer!

Camp Read 2016

Camp Read 2016 group

Camp Read 2016 group

Ten scouts enjoyed a week of summer camp at “Camp Read” in the Adirondacks– eight from our own T2 and two from T1 Hawthorne. These scouts came together as a unit and called themselves the “Fried Chicken Patrol.” Two of our scouts also spent a second week with T24 Dobbs Ferry. All in all, the scouts completed 30-some merit badges and partially completed another half-dozen badges, while in between doing some swimming, boating, climbing, zip-lining, mountain biking, pie-eating, and more. The troop placed second place in the camp-wide Dutch Oven competition. We spent the evening of July 4th off-camp at a carnival watching fireworks in nearby Ticonderoga and made a few before and after camp stops. Not a bad way to start off the summer!
